A 41-year-old foreign man, who, at the same time, is wanted by Interpol for human trafficking, was sentenced yesterday by the Three-member Criminal Court of Volos for theft and damage of great value.

Investigations by the German authorities, the country that also issued the warrant for his arrest, examined encrypted messages which showed that the perpetrator was a member of a ring where “turnover” of millions of euros was laundered from human trafficking.

In 2022, the perpetrator visited Voloswhere he rented a car from a local company, stating that he allegedly needed it for a four-day vacation in Skiathos, while he signed the rental contract with a Turkish name, as a resident of Germany.

As reported by thenewspaper.gr, the vehicle was never returned to the business and was later found crashed and damaged in Xanthi, while investigations by the authorities found DNA traces that showed that the vehicle had been used for human trafficking.

The police addressed the Voliotis owner of the business where the car was rented, who was called to multiple depositions. The businessman recognized the face of the wanted man from photographs presented to him by the authorities, and filed a lawsuit against him for the theft of the vehicle, with the damage he suffered estimated at 10,000 euros.

The case of theft was tried yesterday, without of course the defendant appearing in court, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
