A Sumatran rhinoceros was born last week in refuge in Indonesiaannounced the Ministry of Environment of the country, noting that it is about second rhino of this endangered species to come to life in the same reserve this year.

The black rhino, which belongs to the smallest and hairiest rhinoceros species in the wild, was born last Saturday at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) in Wai Kamba National Park, Lampung Province.

The male baby weighs about 25 kg. His mother, Dalida, was born in the same national park in 2016.

“His birth has in a way confirmed Indonesia’s commitment to protecting rhinos, especially the Sumatran rhino,” Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya said in a statement.

The new member of the species came from a natural mating, the Indonesian Rhino Foundation announced, adding that with the newborn, the total population of Sumatran rhinos in the reserve rose to 10.

There are fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos worldwide, all in Indonesia, according to a 2019 government estimate.

The Sumatran rhinoceros is the only Asian rhinoceros that has two horns. It can reach a height of 1.5 meters and its weight varies between 500 and 960 kilograms.

Last month, a female Sumatran rhino weighing 27 kg was born in the same park.
