Why is pot drainage important for plants?

by

You may not have the knowledge and talent of a gardener or agronomist but you love plants. It is very likely that you know the right position for each plant based on the lighting it needs and you probably even know that each plant needs a different watering frequency.

What you may not know, however, is that without the proper drainage system in the pot, even if it is the right amount, it can lead to withered and yellow leaves. When you feel that you have done everything for your plants but they continue to die, read below.

The good news is that it’s easier than you think.

Why is pot drainage important for plants?

Plants need water to survive, but, according to experts, most plants can not tolerate moist soil for long. That is why many (but not all) pots have drainage gaps. The classic holes in the bottom.

The drainage holes allow the plant to receive the water it needs, while taking care that any excess water does not remain in the soil of the pot and cause root rot. Although drainage holes will not completely correct the effects of over-watering but will mitigate the amount of water that your plant actually absorbs. So for a start you have to be careful not to overdo it.

In addition to acting as a way out of excess water, they also make it easier to understand when a plant needs a transplant. If the roots start to grow through the hole in the bottom of the pot, the plant probably needs a bigger pot. If water comes out immediately after watering then this may mean that there is not enough soil to properly support the roots and the plant needs transplanting.

How to drill a drain hole in ceramic pots and terracotta:

Drainage holes are necessary. If you do not have a flowerpot, there are many videos on YouTube that show you how to safely drill a flowerpot without breaking it. However, because it is easy to break a ceramic pot there is another option, wiser. Use a cheap plastic flowerpot with a drain hole and then put it in the decorative flowerpot. In other words, use the ceramic pot as a pot.

You can identify damaged roots by checking for black or brown spots on the leaves, often yellow. Yellow or withered leaves can be another sign of root rot. If the soil is moist but the leaves wither, this is a sign that the roots are not working properly.

Do not panic. If the root rot is not very extensive, remove the plant from the pot, gently remove the soil and renew it with fresh, in a pot with drainage holes, making sure this time to water it with the right frequency.
