The award-winning Greek writer Vassilis Vassilikos – and one of the ten most translated Greek writers worldwide – passed away today at the age of 89.
He was married to Vasso Papantoniou and they had a daughter.
Vassilis Vassilikos wrote novels, novellas, short stories, plays and poetry. Among his most famous works are: G, The Mythology of Americathe speargun, Victims of peace, The photos, The Coroner, The Death of an American etc.
His books have been translated into 33 languages around the world, including Braille.
His novel Z was adapted to the cinema by director Kostas Gavras.

Vassilis Vassilikos was born on November 18, 1934 in the district of Potamoudia, Kavala. His parents came from Thassos. He graduated from Karyotaki High School in Kavala, Valagianni School (Thessaloniki) and Anatolia American College. Then he studied Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in television directing at Yale University’s drama school (Drama School – SRT) in New Haven, Connecticut (USA).
From 1967 to 1994 he lived and worked abroad (Italy, France, New York the first 7 years exiled by the junta), with a three-year break (1981-1984), during which he assumed the duties of deputy general manager of E.R.T. during the government of Andreas Papandreou.
He worked as an assistant director in foreign productions, documentary director, screenwriter, editor (Dr.) of scripts, draftsman at Arte (1990-1993), journalist and writer.
He collaborated with Nikos Koundouros in the script of the film Little Venuses.
also He was the ambassador of Greece to UNESCO from 1996 to 2004.
