The great writer who passed away yesterday never forgot and never renounced his birthplace – even if he lived permanently in Athens, even if he traveled all over the world.
The most famous Kavaliotis and one of the most beloved figures of Letters for the residents of the city passed away yesterday, at the age of 89. Vassilis Vassilikos, who was born and raised in Kavala, inextricably connected his name with the city that he never forgot and never renounced, even if he lived permanently in Athens and traveled all over the world.
For the older Kavaliotes, for those who knew him, he was the friend, the intellectual, the man who had linked his name both to the history of Kavala and to major political events.
In 2012, the municipality of Kavala, wanting to honor Vassilis Vassilikos for his significant literary work, gave his name to the municipal libraryin a modest ceremony, with the author then not hiding his emotion.
Since then, his interest in the library that bears his name has been constant and alive. At first, he donated most of his personal library to her.
Afterwards, he enriched it at regular intervals with new book titles. It was also not a few times that he accepted invitations to present books by friends of Cavalier writers.
The director of the municipal library of Kavala, Katerina Koumanidou, speaking to APE-MBE, remembered all his kind phone calls to ask if they needed anything, to be interested in its operation. “He wanted,” Mrs. Koumanidou points out, “to keep in touch and communicate with the city and its people. I always admired him for his indomitable spirit and eternal youth. We will miss him”.
THE mayor of Kavala In his condolence message, Thodoros Mouriadis notes that “November left, taking with him one of the most renowned Cavaliers, filling his millions of readers with sadness, who, through stories and fiction, learned pieces of history and everyday life that others wanted to hide or erase”.
“Great, multi-awarded, multi-translated”, continues the mayor, “he reached the end of the world with his writings, paid for his struggles for the Republic with exile, enriched Greek television with his broadcasts and, as a political being that he was always, he claimed to become a member of the State Parliament. Further honors in his memory will be discussed and decided at the next council meeting.”
