The Organ and Bone Marrow Donation party was held in an extremely charged atmosphere in the “Manolis Karellis” hall in Androgeo, mainly due to the presence of Emma’s parents, Angelos and Antonis…

The 21-year-old student Emma Kariotaki, the 17-year-old Angelos Kanakis and the 22-year-old Antonis Mavrogiannakis, were from Crete and tragically died in a traffic accident in the “flower” of their youth.

Despite mourning the untimely loss of their children, the parents of all three made the brave decision to proceed with organ donation. The event was dedicated, from the side of the municipality of Heraklion, to the children and parents for the offer of love and volunteerism.

The evening was titled: “When pain becomes hope… and darkness, light” and took place in the context of the events of the Municipality of Heraklion / Anti-Mayorship of Volunteering for the International Day of Volunteering.

During the event, presentations were made with photos of the three children, while musical groups played their favorite songs.

At the same time, the parents received an honorary plaque from the municipality and referred to how important it is to see “life continue after their own pain and unhappiness”.

The moment when Emma’s parents revealed that she had made the decision and declared her intention to become an organ donor was also touching.

“The supreme gift to man is the donation of organs, blood and bone marrow. An act of love towards our fellow man and ourselves. We cannot talk about a cohesive society if we do not all become donors. To overcome the fear and stereotypes that exist and to generously offer our love,” said Ms. Despina Syngelakis, Deputy Mayor of Volunteering, Youth and Organization and Integrated Emergency Impact Management, to Cretalive.

At the event, the Pancretian Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Neoplasia “Iliachtida” presented their work, while a special mention was made to Theofanis Kanakis. There was also a presentation by Mrs. Irini Gergianaki, doctor and president of the Pancreatic Association of Voluntary Blood Donors & Organ Donors “Hematokritis”, regarding the importance of being an organ donor. The event was also held with the support of the Holy Archdiocese of Crete.
