Tonight, Thessaloniki officially “put on” its Christmas clothes with the mayor of the city, Konstantinos Zervas, giving the trigger to light up the 100,000 LED lights of the impressive fir tree that was erected in Aristotelous Square.
The tree, 17 meters high, from Paleochori, Halkidiki, shone in the presence of thousands of citizens who rushed to the most central point of Thessaloniki to admire the Christmas scene, which is surrounded by a manger, a carousel and wooden houses for charitable activities.
Shortly before pressing the button to light the tree, the mayor, with two children by his side, Diamantis and Margarita, conveyed warm wishes to everyone ahead of Christmas, while thanking the sponsors of the festive events and the employees of the municipality.
The festive atmosphere was framed by a concert by the popular singer, Yiannis Plutarchos, who took the stage flanked by his children, George and Katerina Kakosaiou, as well as Dimitris Chrysohoides.
The celebration for the lighting of the Christmas tree was opened by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, creating a special atmosphere with its melodies.
During the festive season, the Christmas Village behind the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, by the Trade Association of Thessaloniki, will be operating again this year. Christmas gifts, food, traditional sweets and hot drinks will be sold in dozens of wooden houses until January 5, 2024.
In the last few days, the Christmas lights were gradually turned on all over the city. The blue sky has already been placed on the pedestrian street of Agia Sophia, as well as the central roads, the pillars of the coastal Niki Avenue and neighborhoods were also “dressed” with lanterns.
In the areas of Toumba and Triandria, the trees have already been lit, while each municipal community will have its own Christmas neighborhood.
