Signed from the Ministry of Education, Religion and Sports, circular regarding “Instructions – directions for the operation of inclusive education institutions”.

The circular clarifies and points out that hereinafter the school psychologists and social workers have the possibility to talk with the students who wish to meet them, without this requiring the consent of their parents. This provision, which is also in line with the remarks of the Children’s Advocate, strengthens especially those children who experience bad and possibly neglectful or abusive situations, in the family or school environment. Therefore, it is unnoticeable for them to be heard without fear and to receive information about what concerns them. Clearly, if actions of intentional intervention are required in the context of the school, the consent and of course the cooperation of the family and the signing of the relevant cooperation protocol are requested.

In addition, the circular clarifies essential issues and provides instructions and training material concerning the institutions of inclusive education as a whole.

Domna Michailidou, Deputy Minister of Education, Religion and Sports, stated that: “We believe in the role and impact of Psychologists and Social Workers in schools. Until recently, however, in order for a student to address them, the written consent of the parent or guardian was mandatory. Based on international research studies, our discussions with child protection experts and the experience we have gained over the past four years, we have deemed it necessary to proceed with this change. Our aim is that no child should be and feel alone and helpless, especially those children who experience bad situations in the family or school environment. Because exactly as research and experts tell us, when, for example, a child experiences a difficult situation in his environment, if in order to be able to talk about it, the consent of the family is necessary, then this is difficult. With intensive work we have managed to break the silence. As of today, we have taken another step. Our aim is to create an open, friendly accessible school for all children. A school where all students will feel safe. Our main concern is to constantly strengthen their confidence in the school. It is the right of all children to be heard, to ask for information. And it is our duty to ensure it for them.”
