The creation 10 new Special Units of Forestry Operations in the same number of Regional Units of Greece announced yesterday the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, during the discussion and voting of the bill on Civil Protection. This is a ministerial amendment that was included in the draft law of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for the “Restructuring of Civil Protection – National Mechanism for Air Rescue and Air Transport and other urgent provisions”.

As noted by Mr. Kikilias, the new Civil Protection Bill focuses on “prediction and prevention”. Furthermore, he emphasized that Civil Protection is being upgraded and added: “We are acquiring 10 new Special Forest Operations Units and now they amount to 16 throughout the territory.”

In particular, Alexandroupolis, Kozani, Tripoli, Volos, Rhodes, Mytilini, Chios, Samos, Corfu and Kefalonia acquire Special Forestry Operations Units, while there were MODEL in Eleusis in Attica, in Thessaloniki, in Heraklion in Crete, in Lamia, in Ioannina and in Patras.

The forest commanders will have the task of assisting in the execution of forest protection projects against the risk of fire, providing support during extinguishing operations, through specialized pedestrian and airborne units and the use of special motorized vehicles and project machinery, assisting in preventing and dealing with the consequences of natural disasters , technological and other disasters as well as assistance in civil incidents after appropriate training. For the coverage and staffing of the Special Units of Forestry Operations, the organic positions are increasing and recruitments are expected.

In particular, Mr. Kikilias described the Civil Protection bill as “very serious, very critical, crucial and non-partisan”. “Political yes, but non-partisan,” he said.
