From July the new safety systems in the new cars

by

From July 2022, the new regulations on the use of new mandatory car safety systems in circulation in the European Union will be implemented, with the aim of improving the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on European roads.

For many years the European Union has been promoting cycling as an ecological and safe means of transport, while in many European cities there are functional bike lanes that provide solutions to everyday life. Many cities are encouraging more and more citizens to choose the bike, expanding the bike lanes and giving more incentives to use them. This issue has become particularly important during the pandemic period, when cycling is considered safer than public transport. This new trend in cycling is forcing the European Commission to take a number of decisions to address the issue of safe cycling.

According to this regulation, from July 6 of this year, the new cars will have to be equipped with new mandatory safety systems, which will have the effect of reducing the number of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. The new regulation includes an extensive list of mandatory safety systems and functions that new cars will be equipped with. Thus, new passenger cars must be equipped with a speed limit indicator system, lane keeping and a wheel pressure control system. In addition, from 2024 all new vehicles should have the so-called “black boxes” for event logging, while trucks should be equipped with the new BLIS system (Blind Spot Information System), which will improve the safety of cyclists moving to the so-called dead angle. Two years later, the requirement to implement driver fatigue detection systems will come into force. From 2029, the requirement to introduce the DVS instant visibility standard in trucks, which requires the use of cameras or additional mirrors, will apply.

In addition, the new EU regulation could not be without an amendment to the provisions on passive safety systems in new cars, such as the material used in car windscreen glass.

The expectation from the new safety systems is the noticeable reduction of accidents. It is estimated that these systems will reduce the number of road accident victims by 24,794 and prevent 140,740 serious injuries across Europe. Some of these smart security systems are already known and applied to modern vehicle types and some of them will need to be further developed or improved by manufacturers who are willing to comply with the new data of security systems.
