The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Adonis Georgiadis, the Deputy Minister Vassilis Spanakis and the Governor of DYPA, Spyros Protopsaltis, today held a working meeting with the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) Michalis Giannakos.

The aim of the meeting was to announce the development of the new special employment program for 1,300 long-term unemployed aged 55-67 who work in public hospitals and whose contracts expired in the previous months. The Minister of Labor, after listening to the requests of the representatives of the workers who visited him two months ago, managed after his personal intervention to find a solution for the 1,300 contract workers in the hospitals. In collaboration with DYPA, a new program was established that will be announced in the next few days, and these workers will be given the opportunity to remain in their positions, renewing their contracts for another 2 years.

After the meeting, Mr. Georgiadis stated:

“I welcome to the Ministry of Labor the president of POEDIN Mr. Giannakos and the commander of DYPA, Mr. Protopsaltis. About a month and a half ago, protesting employees of the ESY public hospitals from the DYPA program 55-67, who were worried that due to the end of the program, they would lose their jobs, had gathered under the Ministry of Labour. Then I went downstairs, talked to Mr. Giannakos, an old acquaintance of mine from the Ministry of Health and they promised that we will do everything to find a solution to this matter. Today we are here to announce the solution found by Mr. Protopsaltis from DYPA with advisor Stamatis Poulis, and with the help of Deputy Minister Mr. Vassilis Spanakis. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and remember one thing: When we say something to the Department of Labor and Social Security, it will be done. We don’t say it to say it, we say it to make it happen and I want to especially thank the commander of DYPA. It was not easy to find a solution to this problem. It was difficult but with great technical skill, he found the solution. I also want to thank Mr. Giannakos for whom I want to say that I recognize his militancy, his integrity in asserting the rights of workers in public hospitals. Public hospitals must stand tall. In the end, our lives all depend on them.”

The governor of DYPA Mr. Spyros Protopsaltis stated:

“On the initiative of the minister, DYPA implements a special program for all these beneficiaries. Our job is to support the workforce, to find solutions and always under the will and leadership of Mr. Georgiadis, we implement and find solutions to the workers’ problems. We are happy that we were able to find a solution to this problem as well.”

The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN), Michalis Giannakos said:

“We, in turn, want to thank the Minister of Labor, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, who kept his word and prevented 1,200 combat workers from leaving the hospitals and also kept their jobs. Really, it encountered a lot of obstacles, we found out along the way, but they were overcome and this special program was made. I hope there will be other such efforts, because the hospitals need more personnel support”.
