The most extensive snow cover on Christmas Day was in 2001, when over 60% was covered in snow
As the years go by, the chances of a… White Christmas diminish. This year, the extent of the snow cover we will have at Christmas will be a little lower than the average of the last 10 years, that is, only in the mountains, above 1,000 m altitude.
According to the meteo, the most extensive snow cover on Christmas Day occurred in 2001 when more than 60% of the land area of our country was covered with snow.
On the contrary, the most limited snow cover was seen last year at Christmas 2022.
Analyzing the same snow cover data per decade, it is observed that during the period 2011-2020 the percentage reduction of snow cover compared to the decades 1991-2000 and 2001-2010 is significant.
In particular, in the period 2011-2020 the biggest decrease is observed in Western Macedonia, where the snow cover on Christmas Day has decreased by up to 50% in the last decade, compared to the period 1991-2000.
In all the mountainous areas of our country, there is a decrease in the probability of snow cover, not only at Christmas, but in general during the winter months.
