Tragedy occurred this morning in Rethymno when a 35-year-old man died inside the redevelopment construction site in the Atsipopoulou area.
According to information, the accident occurred in the area of ​​Atsipopoulos, when, unknown how, the unfortunate man hit by an excavator.
The information states that the 35-year-old man was from Athens and was a relative of the contractor’s family.
The operator of the machine, according to information reported to neakriti.gr by the President of the Labor Center of Rethymno Kostas Nikolidakis, due to a wrong handling turned the machine sharply where the 35-year-old was standing, killing him.
The operator of the fatal machine is also said to be a relative of the contractor as well as the deceased. The operator and the deceased are reportedly related through cousins.
As Mr. Nikolidakis notes it is not yet clear whether it is a work-related accident as it has not been known whether the deceased was working at the construction site or was in Crete to see relatives who were at the construction site and had simply passed by.
The case and preliminary investigation is ongoing to determine whether or not it will be registered as an occupational accident. Information indicates that the Police are already investigating the case, the operator was arrested and is testifying about what happened. Reports also say that the man was already dead at the construction site after the hit.
