The Catholic manger – village of Santa Maria and the “living” mangers of Salakos and Maritsi attract thousands of visitors every year
Three traditional Christmas cribs have monopolized the interest of the residents of Rhodes for decades. Every year thousands of Rodites and Roditisses visit these mangers, which operate throughout the holidays up to Fota.
It is about her Manger Santa Maria (of the Catholic Church of Rhodes), its Manger Salakou and the Manger of Maritson.
The Manger of Santa Maria it is the oldest of the three and was created in 1930 in the Catholic church and in fact, in the first years it operated inside the church while it has been moved to an independent area next to the Catholic church. The manger was built during the Italian occupation of Rhodes according to the standards of the Manger of Naples which is one of the most famous in all of Europe.
Its designer was the famous architect Armando Bernabiti, whose stamp is on many of the buildings located in the central parts of the city of Rhodes.
It is even said that the then Italian commander, Mario Lago, allocated a considerable sum for the purchase of mixed statues from Naples to adorn the Manger of Rhodes.
The first statues also represented the villagers of Rhodes in local costumes. This manger is visited every year by hundreds of residents of Rhodes and it is characteristic that it is enriched year after year.

The cultural association of Salakos “The Cave” is responsible for its operation. It is visited every year by thousands of Rhodians, having the opportunity to admire the idyllic landscape at the same time. Visitors are offered mountain tea while local products are sold at special stands.
