In the village of Ano Vouves in the regional unit of Chania in Crete is perhaps the most famous olive tree in the world – as it is believed to be the oldest.

The exact age of the olive tree cannot be determined but scientists from the University of Crete estimated that it is about 4,000 years old.

Furthermore, tree ring analysis showed that the tree is at least 2,000 years old.

In any case – and only from the average – the olive of Vouvos is at least 3,000 years old

The trunk has a circumference of 12.5 meters and a diameter of 4.6 meters and the tree still produces olives today.

In 1997, the Vouvos olive tree was declared a preserved natural monument while branches from the tree were used for the wreaths of the winners of the Athens Olympics in 2004 and the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
