Serious deficiencies in units blood are observed in hospitals of the entire country, due to the reduced attendance of blood donors during the holiday season but due to the fact that those suffering from viruses, flu and Covid-19 are excluded from donating blood.

Patients with thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia) as they do not receive the necessary blood units required for proper treatment their.

THE Hellenic Thalassemia Association addresses appeal anyone who can donate blood to do so now as shortages put thalassemia patients at risk.

The president of the Hellenic Association of Thalassemia, Vassilis Dimos, speaking to APE-MBE, notes that 350 thalassemia patients undergo transfusions in Thessaloniki at the AHEPA, Hippocrate and Agios Pavlos hospitals, and each of them needs four units of blood monthly.

In particular, he states that in Thessaloniki approximately 60-70 units are needed per day for thalassemia transfusions and a total of 1400 per month.

“Many transfusions are postponed and there is great concern among patients, since many blood donors are sick with viruses, seasonal flu or Covid-19 and are excluded from donating blood,” Mr. Dimos points out.
