Dozens of boxes of books made “wings” from the bookstore of the homeless in the center of Athens
Thousands of books “made wings” from the homeless bookstore on Piraeus Street in the center of Athens.
The theft was discovered this morning by one of its three founders when he arrived at the bookstore and according to estimates the theft must have taken place yesterday Thursday in the morning hours.
According to ertnews.gr, it is estimated that the unknowns stole approximately 8,000 books, most of which are donations from private individuals and publishing houses, mainly during the holidays, in order to support the homeless.
“They took it – if you ask me honestly I would give it to them with all my heart, but they come in and take it. We don’t have money or anything, we live 4 people with great difficulty (…) I’m not sad that they took the books because books will come to us again – the world loves us, has embraced us…” emphasized the Founder of the bookstore for the homeless, Leonidas Koursoumis.
As he says, for 5 years efforts have been made to relocate to another permanent place in Gyzi, so that all these books can be opened and accessible to the public. However, mainly due to financial difficulties, the project has not been achieved
