The mayor of Zakynthos, Giorgos Stasinopoulos, is asking the Civil Protection to declare the municipality in a state of emergency because water with oil is running from the island’s taps
Water with… oil runs from the taps in Zakynthos.
The mayor of Zakynthos Giorgos Stasinopoulos spoke on Monday morning to the TV station SKAI and the program ‘SIMERA’ regarding the issue that has arisen since yesterday Sunday on the island
As he explained, “This issue was caused by an accident we had on the road and the oil found its way to the rainwater, the wells were broken and there was a broken DEVAZ pipeline underneath, it was raining all night, so if we had 30 liters there were 2,000 and all the houses were filled with oil”
Regarding the situation in the residents’ houses, he said: In the center of Zakynthos, between 3,000 and 5,000 residents live, at the moment they do not have the possibility to bathe. In every house we have small tanks, which store the water and we use it, that’s where the big problem is as the plastic attracts the smell of oil.”
“Yesterday, Sunday, we informed the Civil Protection to declare a state of emergency”, he stressed
Regarding the checks that have been done so far, he said: “We have checked all the schools, we emptied all the main pipes, we washed them but there is an issue from the clocks to the tanks of the houses.”
