The European Commission approved a decision to support Greece with 25 million euros as an advance from the EU Solidarity Fund for the disasters caused by the bad weather “Daniel”says a Commission announcement.

The Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner, Elisa Ferreira noted that “last year’s floods caused by Cyclone Daniel were a tragic event for Greece. People lost their lives and their homes and important infrastructure was destroyed. By advancing the EU Solidarity Fund, we are helping Greece recover from the disaster and demonstrating that we stand with Greece in full solidarity.”

On November 20, 2023, the Commission received a request from Greece for assistance from the Solidarity Fund in relation to the damages caused. Greece estimated a total direct loss of 2.3 billion euros and requested an advance payment.

Based on the preliminary assessment, the Commission has concluded that the conditions for the advance payment from the Solidarity Fund are met. Therefore, the down payment should amount to at 25% of the prescribed levy, which amounts to 25.3 million euros.

As the Commission notes, the “Daniel” storm was the deadliest tropical cyclone in recorded history. The disaster caused widespread flooding (mainly in the regions of Thessaly and Central Greece) with victims reaching 17 deaths.
