Student associations, students and labor unions are participating in the mobilization
March against the establishment of non-state universities takes place at center of Thessaloniki.
Student associations, students and labor unions are participating in the mobilization. They express it their opposition to the submission of the bill that will allow the establishment of non-state Universities.
As they say, such a development puts public universities in existential dangerdrastically undermines the professional rights of graduates and surrenders education to the needs and profits of capital.
The participants in the mobilization shout slogans against the government and ask that the disputed bill not be submitted to Parliament for a vote.
“We will not accept that injustice becomes law! Access to university education will depend even more on the wallet of each family. For many there will be a Minimum Admission Base, multiple nationwide exams and other barriers to being able to study, while for some there will be a minimum payment base that will buy studies and equivalent degrees!
We will not tolerate the dissolution of our degrees! Our diploma turns into another “paper” in the jungle of buying and selling diplomas and degrees. We will have to chase even more even paid certificates and seminars to be able to survive as the categorization of degrees grows, with graduates competing for a job squeezing everyone’s work, wage, professional rights down.
We will not accept the even greater commercialization of education! Our rights do not fit in this University they are preparing. Government funding for higher education has fallen by 66%. The lack of staff, infrastructure, student residences is an irrefutable witness. Rather than being a free public good, higher education works even more for the benefit of entrepreneurs. This is also confirmed by the situation in the rest of the countries abroad with the generalization of all and the most expensive tuition fees in public HEIs”, he states, among other things, in a statement issued by the Coordination of Student Associations of Thessaloniki regarding the Government’s intention to proceed with the establishment of non-state universities in our country.
Protesters hold placards and banners against the establishment of non-state universities. “Not at private universities. Do not table the bill. Exclusively public and free studies”, reads the central banner of the protest.
The march started from Kamaras Squarewhere earlier the demonstrators held a rally and will move to the center of the city.
On foot for today’s mobilization is the Greek Police. MAT forces monitor the course while as announced, hand-held cameras have been deployed by EL.AS. for its surveillance.
