A criminal group that was deceiving the elderly under the pretext of treating a relative was immediately dismantled by the Security Sub-Directorate of Rhodes.

A 22-year-old foreigner and a 20-year-old local woman were immediately arrested, while another person, an accomplice of the perpetrators, is involved in the case.

A criminal case was filed against them for the specific offenses of forming a gang, committing fraud, committing theft, possession of drugs and weapons.

The gang, acting with a specific methodology and roles, called elderly pretending doctors on phone and on the pretext of emergency surgery of their relative attempted to extort large sums of money.

Police officers of the Security Sub-Directorate of Rhodes, investigating a related complaint, managed at noon on Friday to locate, with the assistance of men from the DIAS Team, the two perpetrators who had just collected valuables from an elderly woman.

In the possession of the perpetrators and during a search of their residence, the following were found and confiscated:

  • Valuables with an estimated value of 1,000 euros, as the proceeds of fraud
  • 1,200 euros in 50-note notes, as fraudulent
  • Two wheeled moped which they had removed and were using
  • Two pocket knives
  • Raw cannabis weighing 11.7 grams
  • 40 narcotic tablets
  • High accuracy weight scale

From the thorough examination of the evidence of the case, two cases of cheating elderly women were found out, which they committed on January 24 and 26, 2024, shortly before they were arrested and terminated.

The stolen bicycle and the valuables, after being identified, were returned to the beneficiaries, while the rest of the evidence was confiscated.

Those arrested will be taken to the District Court of Rhodes.
