The meeting of the Risk Assessment Committee of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection with the aim of worsening weather has been completed, while the Inter-Ministerial Committee is underway with the aim of operational coordination of all involved ministries and agencies.

The meeting of the Risk Assessment Committee was attended by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Theodoros Vagias, the Commander of the Unified Coordination Center for Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), Lt. Gen. Dimitrios Briolas, and the members of the Risk Assessment Committee, Efthimios Lekkas (president of OASP), Theodoros Kolidas (Director of EMY), Dimitrios Ziakopoulos (meteorologist) and Christina Souzi (meteorologist).

According to the updated Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin (EDEK) issued today by the National Meteorological Service (EMS), the weather will gradually deteriorate as two disturbances, the first from today and the second from tomorrow at noon and Tuesday (30/ 1) they will affect the country. More intense phenomena will be manifested by the second disturbance.

The main features will be the noticeable drop in temperature during the three days from today to Tuesday (of the order of 10 degrees Celsius) and the snowfall mainly in the eastern winds of the country from the height of Thessaly and further south.

At the same time, stormy north winds will prevail in the Aegean and strong rains and storms will occur mainly in the southern sea-coastal sections.

More detail:

A. Snowfall will occur:

a) Today in the highlands of central and eastern Sterea, Evia and Peloponnese, while from the afternoon hours it will also snow in mountainous areas of eastern Thessaly and Crete.

b) From the morning hours tomorrow, snowfall will continue in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Thessaly, Sporades, central and eastern Sterea, Evia and in the northern and eastern parts of the Peloponnese. From midday the phenomena will intensify and it will snow in areas with a lower altitude (indicatively 300-400m). Snowfall will also occur in the Aegean islands (in the mountains) as well as in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of Crete.

In particular, for Attica, intensity of snowfall is predicted from tomorrow afternoon in the mountains and semi-mountains and from the evening in areas with a relatively lower altitude (indicative 300-400m).

c) On Tuesday, snowfall will continue even in areas with lower altitude in Thessaly, central and eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, Sporades, northern and eastern areas of the Peloponnese as well as mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the Cyclades and Crete.

d) On Wednesday (31/1) the snowfall will gradually weaken and will be limited to the mountains and semi-mountains of Crete.

B. Very gale force north northeast winds 9 and locally 10 Beaufort will blow:

a) From the early morning hours of Tuesday initially in the northern and gradually in the central and southern Aegean.

b) On Wednesday the stormy north winds will be maintained in the Aegean but from the midday hours in the north they will be limited to 8 Beaufort and will gradually weaken.

C. Heavy rains and storms are predicted from the first disturbance today in places in Evia and Crete and mainly from the second disturbance from tomorrow noon until Tuesday mainly in the Sporades, Evia, Cyclades and Crete.
