The total number of of arrived immigrants in January amounted to 3,795, down 30% on the previous month in December 2023, according to the Department of Immigration and Asylum. The total reduction compared to September 2023 exceeded 70%.
The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum states in a statement that migration pressure has subsided, to a very large extent, in Evros and, secondarily, in the South-East Aegean, while it remains notable in Lesbos and, secondarily, in Samos.
It is also reported that it is observed that, even more so, on days with bad weather and strong winds, the migration pressure increases (instead of decreasing, as in the past), as the traffickers consider that the rain and wind make it difficult to locate and the work of the Coast Guard and they do not hesitate to endanger human lives in this way.
According to the ministry, the national reception and hospitality system continues to show high occupancy rates, just below 80%. Nevertheless, in January, for the first time in the last twelve months, a significant decrease was recorded as departures were almost twice as many as arrivals.
The Ministry of Migration and Asylum states in its announcement that it is taking all measures for the effective accommodation of asylum seekers, safely for local communities and themselves, in accordance with Greek, European and international law and the national interest.
