The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece sent a letter to the 300 members of parliamentin view of the submission of the bill for same-sex couples by this evening in the Parliament.

In the seven-page letter, signed by the chief secretary Ioannis Karamouzis, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece expresses its concerns andopposes the bill, presenting a total of 8 dimensions of the public sphere, to which the church gives its own answers.

In particular, the letter states: “The bill abolishes fatherhood and motherhood, it gender-neutralizes the parent-child relationship, turns parents from fathers and mothers into neutral guardians, and places the rights of gay adults above the interests of future children, who will be allowed to be parented by same-sex couples and grow up without a father or mother, in an environment of gender role confusion’.

Regarding surrogacy, in the letter it is argued: “While it was argued that the bill is silent and does not allow surrogate pregnancy in favor of male couples, contradictory regulations are provided that the acquisition of children by surrogate pregnancy will be recognized in Greece, if it was registered in a foreign state that allows it”.

The bill is expected to be introduced to the relevant committees next Monday and will be voted on in the Plenary on February 14 and 15.
