The Senate of the University of Ioannina recognizes the right of our students to fight for the future of Public Higher Education in our country. However, she also expresses her strong concern over the fact that some forms of student struggle, which are expressed by the closure of university departments, suspension of the examination period of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and sometimes by the obstruction of research work, are directed against the Public University.
The Senate of the University of Ioannina, respecting the role of the University as a cell of knowledge production and as a place of education and research – which must remain open and operate without obstacles – has an obligation to safeguard the smooth operation of the Institution and its academic processes in any appropriate way . In its extraordinary meeting no. 1160/2-2-2024, taking into account sub no. 577/25-1-2024 circular of the Ministry of Finance on “Clarifications for the implementation of the provisions of Law 4957/2022 (A’ 141)” where it is emphasized that: (i) the provision of article 64, paragraph 4 on the extension of the semester by decision of the Senate is valid only for reasons of force majeure and not for reasons of extraordinary circumstances, (ii) the final exams are held after the completion of the academic semester and therefore the time of the exam cannot coincide with the time of conducting semester courses, and (iii) ) the educational activities of one academic year cannot be transferred to the next with the exception of the repeat examination, as well as document no. 579/1-2-2024 of the Ministry of Finance (especially paragraphs 4 and 5), and after finding that extraordinary conditions are taking place in Departments of the University of Ioannina with the inability to access their infrastructures and it is not possible to live in the presence of the participants of the educational process for conducting student exams,
It decided by a large majority the following:
- In all cases and for as long as, based on the above, the live conduct of student exams is not possible, the examination process during the current examination period will be carried out using modern remote examination/evaluation methods, while ensuring personal data of those participating in the examination process, as well as the integrity of the process.
- The University of Ioannina has the necessary technical and organizational measures to implement the examination process with modern distance education methods. To inform teachers and students, the technical instructions are updated and will be posted immediately on the Foundation’s website.
- A Distance Examination Support Committee is established for the remote conduct of the examinations. The Departments, where it is not possible to have a live examination process, formulate an updated examination program (without extension of the semester, as defined in their already approved academic calendars) and set up Departmental Committees to Support the process.
