“There is a fixed, but unfair system. It is inhumane. Just think that within three hours the fate of a child is decided”, said G. Babiniotis
His proposal for a radical change in the way of admission to higher education, with the abolition of the Panhellenic Examinations, was explained to SKAI and the program Today George Babiniotis, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics and former Rector of the University of Athens.
“There is a fixed, but unfair system. It is inhumane. Just think that within three hours the fate of a child is judged, if he has an anxiety disorder, if he has an illness… If he doesn’t do well in a lesson, he will come back after a year” pointed out the professor.
“Let what applies everywhere apply to Greece as well. The image of the student as it emerges from the three years of study at the Lyceum to give the “form” of the student with an Academic, so to speak, Baccalaureate, as long as necessary for some time temporarily there may be a system of exams, to complement, however, because the entrance will be based mainly on the performance in the Baccalaureate. And so that there are no backtracks and deviations, there is the Subject Bank, which is central and gives an objective basis to the students’ performance. If this system changes, we will find the Lyceum again” noted Mr. Babiniotis.
“The admission basis will be with the Lyceum grade and in a school with a high demand there could be a supplementary examination which, however, will complete the score you have, the exam will not determine everything for youexplained Giorgos Babiniotis.
As he pointed out, we have a High School which has now fallen into disuse, in obsolescence in under-functioning, that is, in the best period of the age of 15 to 18 students who have the greatest maturity when we can have the best educational results… There is no education. What is there? There is a degree of a quasi-informal tutoring unreliable and for the students themselves, who go to private schools and tutoring schools, a situation that cannot go on any longer”.
