Renault with Arkana wants to go beyond, not only in design, but also in driving. It is aimed mainly at family heads who have strong driving concerns and like to put a fair amount of adventure in their driving. The new French model manages to pique interest not only in its capabilities, but also in the acquisition cost which is very affordable.
With Arkana, French designers managed to combine it SUV aesthetics with the aggressive view of a coupe. The large dimensions (length 4.56 m., Width 1.82 m. And height 1.57 m.) Offer comfortable spaces inside, which can accommodate five passengers with high levels of comfort. When you see it for the first time, you immediately realize that it is a French model. The headlights have a characteristic shape and are a reference point of the C-SUV model and the hood has several “nerves” that give it a more dynamic character. The rear pillar C is quite low and is what gives the coupe feel. Also, at the rear, the light strip between the lights is another striking feature of the car’s appearance.
His driving skills in practice proved to be many. During the test drive and for over 600 kilometers, we found that it performs well on dirt roads. It met the requirements in the best way and this was helped by the increased distance from the ground that reaches 20 cm. Although the model was originally designed for the Russian market, at the last minute the French changed their minds and offered it in the European market as well. Judging by the way it catches the eye of passers-by, commercial success should be taken for granted, as it can fully meet the requirements of European drivers.
Although it has the shape of a coupe, with the C-pillar being quite low, however the interior spaces are increased, as there is enough space in the knees and head. The storage space is large, reaching 513 liters and satisfies the needs of a family, while it can reach up to 1296 liters with the folding of the rear seats.
On the plus side is the very good driving position, which offers a great peripheral perspective. Also, the multimedia system with the touch screen, the electric parking brake, the wireless (inductive) charging function of the smartphone and the smart storage spaces offer an upgraded driving experience. Driver and co-driver face the familiar dashboard they have encountered in the Clio, with the materials being of good quality and with a good fit.
The hidden paper that differentiates it greatly from the competition is the mechanical set, which consists of a 1.3 liter turbo gasoline engine, which also receives a small (12V) electric assist. It delivers 140 hp and 260 Nm of torque, with the drive being transmitted exclusively to the front wheels, via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h comes in 9.8 seconds, while its top speed reaches 205 km / h. Consumption during our test ranged close to 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers, which can be characterized as low.
We found good ride quality, with no noise even at high speeds, and a polite suspension behavior consisting of Mac Pherson struts at the front and a semi-flexible axle at the rear. Shifting gears is subtle and exemplary. Even when we drove it fast, the steering wheel met the increased demands, the brakes did a good job and the safety systems raised the confidence and safety ratios.
When you have such a multi-tool in your hands, you do not have many negative elements. Maybe the only downside we found is the incomplete information of the touch screen. The price of Arkana, even in the basic version is rich and without any shortcomings. Our test car costs 26,490 euros, which can be characterized as one of the most competitive in the category.
