1864: During the American Civil War, the Southern submarine “Hanley” attacks the Northern battleship “Housatonic”. Both end up at the bottom. This is the first naval battle between a submarine and a surface ship.
1869: The first test route of the steam-powered urban railway Athens – Piraeus is being carried out.
1914: The Greek army leaves Northern Epirus, following the demand of the Great Powers. The Provisional Government of Northern Epirus is formed under Georgios Christakis-Zografos, which declares the region’s autonomy.
1914: British suffragettes attack and smash the windows of the home of the British Home Secretary and set fire to the premises of a tennis club, vigorously and violently demanding the right to vote.
