Heraklion: Pilot project for the promotion of the underwater environment in Elounda

THE Region of Crete will support the proposal of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos for the implementation of a pilot program in the sea area of Eloundas agreed today during a meeting with the governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis.

In the context of the cooperation that will be developed in cooperation with the marine antiquities, actions are foreseen to highlight the image of the unique underwater space that exists in the area of Elound either through diving or via the internet, without interfering with archeological sites.

The “European Territorial Cooperation Group Amfiktionia” consists of European and Mediterranean self-governing bodies, of all levels and cooperates with scientific centers and institutes located in the Mediterranean countries, with EU institutions and international non-governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The organizations with which it has a cooperation agreement at the moment are the Institute of Underwater Archaeological Research (IENAE), the University of Piraeus, the Institute of Research Technology (FORTH) and the Region of Crete, while the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos is a member of Amfiktionia. other municipalities of Greece and Mediterranean countries.

The meeting was attended by the mayor of Agios Nikolaos Antonis Zervos, the director of the European Territorial Cooperation Group “Amfiktionia” Vassilis Xenos and the authorized advisor for European and International Affairs of the Region of Crete George Alexakis.
