by

Defamatory comments, isolation, exhausting workload, removal of work obligations, and even sexual assault, make a employee, victim of moral harassment (Mobbing) in workplace. The specific framework of recognition, but also the confrontation of the moral harassment that has 40 main manifestations, were the subject of the internet seminar on the topic, “Ethical harassment at work”conducted on the initiative of the Liaison Office of the University of Macedonia.

Specifically in Greece, employees aged 18-24 and 55-64, at least 75% of the participants in a survey conducted by the association “No Mobbing at Work”, have been subjected to moral harassment, at least once a week or daily. “, According to what the founder of the association” No Mobbing at Work “, Chrysopigi Vardikou, pointed out to the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency.

“It’s something I’ve experienced myself. It is an issue that affects all employees, but mainly young people aged 18-24 and over 55 years. “Young people are more vulnerable to moral harassment in the workplace,” said Ms. Vardikou, noting that “the part of recognition is important. There are 40 main manifestations of moral harassment. In Greece, according to the research done by our union, in March 2021, it is practiced mainly with the bad criticism of the work, which is not constructive, it is done disparagingly reducing the employee, when we do not let someone express himself, when we treat him as invisible, when we isolate him and he can even reach sexual assault in some cases “.

Referring to a specific incident that became known to the union, she said that a person working in a public body in Germany, experienced moral harassment, went to his boss and reported the issue and the difficulties he was facing. The body took legal action against the perpetrator. The victim was promoted, paid for his training to develop professionally and the perpetrator was removed from his position and lost the right to work in the public sector again.

“Mobbing”, pointed out Ms. Vardikou, “is a traumatic experience. “Moral harassment is defined by its regularity, its duration, when someone constantly attacks someone repeatedly, that is, if it happens every day or every week and the motivation is for someone to go out of the workplace.” She explained that in order to deal with it, “it is important to understand the moral harassment in its early stages, because we can set our limits firmly and if the perpetrator does not respect them, then we know that it is harassment and not a misunderstanding. If we let the situation escalate, without discussing it, then the situation goes away and we must turn to our boss, in order to resolve the situation through mediation and of course there is the legal way as from July 21 the moral harassment in workplace is provided by our law “.

The founder of the association “No Mobbing at Work”, stressed that, “it has been proven that 40% of people who suffer from moral harassment have depression, the percentage is huge. “One in two victims of depression attempt suicide, suffer from psychosomatic disorders, loss of income and post-traumatic stress disorder,” he said. similar behaviors, every week and daily. In Greece there is no discrimination between men and women in moral harassment, but women face other forms of harassment such as sexual harassment. “In organizations with more than 250 employees, there is systematic moral harassment because there is a long distance from power.”

The head of the Liaison Office of the University of Macedonia, Sofia Panagiotidou, speaking to APE-MPE, said that, “for us, the way to deal with mobbing, is the education that should start from the students, who will go to work tomorrow, as employees, as bosses, to learn how to behave. This is why we decided to implement this seminar, to create a specific way of thinking, in which, everyone should respect each other, give opportunities and share knowledge and experiences, provide working conditions that will help them develop personally and professionally “.

At the end of the event, students and participants had the opportunity to look at specific cases and events that took place in the workplace, in order to learn to recognize when a behavior is moral harassment and when it is an individual behavior, which is not intended to harm an employee.
