“What we saw and experienced was hell. Unreal scenes. Wagons one on top of the other, the area full of debris and we couldn’t get close,” said the president of the EKAV Thessaly Workers’ Union, Mr. Yiannis Goulas
What they saw in the first minutes after the train tragedy in Tempi was described on camera by the president of the EKAV Thessaly Workers Union, Mr. Yiannis Goulas, and the volunteer rescuer from Magnesia, Mr. Vassilis Iliopoulos, who were at the memorial service for the 57 dead held at the scene of the tragedy.
“What we saw and experienced was hell. Unreal scenes. Wagons one on top of the other, the area full of debris and we couldn’t approach” noted Mr. Goulas.
“We have been involved in all situations to help, as volunteers we have been through a lot but this situation we have never seen before, the services were very fast here”
“It was an eerie image. Burned flesh, disintegrated bodies, we had to take piles out of the wagons and transport them,” emphasized Mr. Iliopoulos.
“The worst situation for us was when the relatives of the victims arrived at the scene of the tragedy,” said Mr. Iliopoulos.
