“Catapult” was the Chief Prosecutor of the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion, Efstratia Meghe for the 39-year-old who attacked her estranged husband with caustic liquid in the hotel room where the two had met for a date.

The Prosecutor proposed the guilt of the 39-year-old as charged – for attempted murder with possible malice – while she proposed the acquittal of the 20-year-old student, and the guilt of the 46-year-old taxi driver, who is accused of complicity in the attempted murder.

In detail, the Prosecutor said for the 39-year-old that she was aware of the criminal past of the 37-year-old as well as his family, however she accepted to proceed with a relationship, they made dreams and plans, until – due to the various problems that existed, in the summer of 2022, a few months before the event – he had clearly realized that this relationship could not last.

However, Ms. Menge pointed out, while formally there was a split in their relationship, they actually continued to have an emotional bond and sexual contacts, which mainly took place at the hotel where the incident took place.

According to the prosecutor’s judgment, as it was said, that night there was no rape as claimed by the accused. The Prosecutor considers that there was a sexual relationship in a different way, but not rape. The Prosecutor also considers that not by chance, 5 days before, the 39-year-old had ordered the specific amount of sulfuric acid, using her son’s e-mail and invoices from her father’s company.

Put 100 ml of the caustic liquid in a jar, undissolved, while as the Prosecutor estimated, it is possible that she had weighed the quantity.

Mrs. Menge mentioned that the accused brought the victim to the place she wanted. She led him to sleep – the Prosecutor considers it certain that the 37-year-old had fallen asleep based on the evidence in the case file and also the autopsy that was done, which showed that the liquid had fallen on the wall, the bed and the sheets – contrary to the 39-year-old’s claim of an argument and attempted attack against her but also the fact that she threw the liquid ousa in defense. The District Attorney, vertical, reported that the woman brought the 37-year-old where she wanted and threw the liquid on him while he was sleeping, causing the left side of his face to be eaten. She emphasized that if he had been standing in an aggressive mood, the liquid would have “found” him in the front and on the main body, and not just on the left side.

Could this act bring death? asked the Prosecutor, noting that the accused may not have intended to kill him, but she was in a position to know that her act could also result in death and she accepted it.

Actually, the Prosecutor emphasized, the 37-year-old is not dead by chance, as the caustic liquid has eroded his muscle mass, while if the 39-year-old had poured the liquid on the head or the heart, the development would have been tragic for the 37-year-old.

“He has no regrets”

Another element that the Prosecutor focused on is, as she said, that the defendant has not regretted the harm she caused to this day. If she has regretted anything, she said – and was asked several times by the headquarters – it is that she did it and deprived herself of her freedom and her two children, but she has not regretted the harm she caused.

The absence of the victim caused a painful impression, but as the Prosecutor said, it would have caused a painful impression “if we saw him here, as he himself would not be able to manage the disfigurement he has suffered from the caustic liquid”.

Proposal for exoneration of the 20-year-old woman, guilt of the taxi driver

With reference to the 20-year-old friend of the 39-year-old, the Chief Prosecutor noted that her involvement was two telephone communications, with the 2nd communication actually taking place while she was abroad where she was studying. Ms. Menge believes that because of her young age and because she had no knowledge of who the 37-year-old is, she believed that she would help a friend of hers get back together with her husband.

As for the 46-year-old taxi driver, the Prosecutor proposed his guilt, considering that he knew that at that moment he was running away from the 39-year-old.
