1802: Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’, the most famous piano composition, is printed in sheet music.
1821: Sultan Mahmut II, with his firman, demands from the Patriarch of Constantinople Gregory V the excommunication of Alexander Ypsilantis and Michael Soutsos for the Revolution in the Transdanubian Hegemony.
1827: George Karaiskakis repels an attack by Kioutachis, initially 800 and the next day 6,000 Turks in Keratsini of Piraeus. This battle was one of his most brilliant victories.
1913: Greek military unit liberates Agioi Saranda, during the First Balkan War.
1991: The brutal beating of African-American Rodney King by police officers in Los Angeles is captured on amateur video. There will be serious riots from the city’s black community.
2017: Greece ranks 26th among the 28 member states of the European Union, in terms of its performance in the field of digital economy and society, according to a survey by the European Commission (Commission).
Births
1804 : Gustave d’Estall, French writer and Philhellenic. He worked in Greece during the Ottonian Regency in the agricultural sector and proposed the establishment of state farms. He advocated the ideas of Saint Simon, a fellow utopian socialist. When it was learned that he was a sensimonist he was dismissed from his position and forced to leave Greece. (D. 9/4/1886)
1847: Alexander Graham Bell, American Scottish physicist, inventor of the telephone. (D. 2/8/1922)
1915: Nikos Gounaris, Greek light song troubadour. (D. 5/5/195)
Deaths
1957:Grigorios Auxentiou, Cypriot activist of EOKA, who was burned alive in his hideout by the British army of occupation. (Born 22/2/1928)
1961: Paul Wittgenstein, Austrian pianist. He lost his right arm during World War I and had a great career playing left-handed. Works for Wittgenstein’s left hand were written by Richard Strauss, Erich Korngold, Paul Hindemith, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel and Benjamin Britten. (Born 5/11/1887)
1993: Albert Seibin, American medical researcher. He discovered a polio vaccine (vaccine), cheaper and just as effective as that of the pioneer Jonas Salk. (Born 8/26/1906)
