The mechanisms of the ejection seat on the F16 Block 52+ fighter jet that crashed yesterday afternoon in the sea area off Halkidiki and Alonissos, combined with the composure, experience and training of the operator, were decisive factors in his salvation.

The 29-year-old pilot at noon on Wednesday reported an engine problem during the “Ierax” exercise which foresees fierce close dogfights at the border. The engine, after some interruptions, shut down permanently. As restarting the engine was not possible the pilot abandoned the aircraft using the ejection seat.

While control of the aircraft was lost, he activated the ejection procedure where the aircraft’s canopy was initially automatically removed. A pyrotechnic device then releases the parachute holding the pilot. The straps are automatically cut, and the seat moves away and then slowly lowers. Under the buttocks, there is the life pack, where there are things that keep him alive when he reaches the water. Among them boat, life jacket and a kit.

the time of launch the pilot is unconscious (blackout), as acceleration (G) exceeds human endurance limits. Whenever everything is done mechanically and automatically, because it is a given that he cannot do something himself. Usually before reaching the ground the pilot regains consciousness. However, this is not a given. The manufacturers believe that the pilot does not regain consciousness even when he reaches the water. Then, through the sensors on the life jacket, it inflates, and at the same time, the boat tied to his leg also inflates.

In this particular case, according to information the pilot and the equipment they worked perfectly for him, while the transmitter (Personal Locator Beacon – PLB) signals for the rescue helicopter.
