SOS for the rescue of the famous beach of Skala Eresou in Lesbos, the residents of the area are sending a letter to the relevant bodies, citing its imminent destruction, due to the cementing of property on the beach.
It was decided to redraw the seafront, the old seafront and the beach, to the detriment of the sense of justice and circumventing any concept of protection of the beautiful beach, they declare, asking “that all competent bodies, both of the public and of the Municipality of Lesvos, intervene, so that stop environmental crime”.
The letter in detail
“SAVING AMMOUDIA – ERESOS BEACH (AFENDELLI) FROM THE CONSTRUCTION, BASED ON LAW 5092/4.3.2024 – GAZETTE A’-33 OF MARCH 4, 2024.
TO:
1. Regional Governor of North Aegean Mr. K. Moutzouris
2. Mayor of Mytilini, Mr. Panagiotis Christofas
3. Mayor of Western Lesbos, Mr. Taxiarchis Verros
4. Minister of National Home & Finance Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis
5. Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis
On the southwest side of our island, in beautiful Eresos, is the famous beach of Skala or Gialos as the locals call it. This beach stretches for three (3) kilometers with crystal clear blue waters with a wide sandy beach and fine gray sand, details which do not leave even the most demanding visitor unmoved. For this reason, together with its other important cultural and historical elements, it is a pole of attraction for thousands of tourists.
At a time when all the agencies of the island are trying, led by the Municipality of Lesvos, to attract tourism, it is at least an oxymoron to destroy such a recognized value and quality beach, for the satisfaction of interests that have nothing to do with the public good that should be our beaches meet.
The tourists of Eresos, mostly Europeans, are very aware of nature protection issues. With their attitude in every place they visit, they influence a large part of the local tourist world, while it is known that their knowledge of environmental issues and nature protection makes them protest against various illegalities and exert pressure for the establishment and observance of protection measures not only to the Greek authorities, but also to the embassies of their countries and to the European Parliament.
Following with anxiety and interest the public debate in the electronic and printed media, regarding the imminent destruction of the western beach of Gialos (Skala) Eresos, due to the cementing of property on the sandy beach,
WE PROTEST
and as the Federation of Lesbian Associations of Attica (OLSA)
WE REQUEST: That all competent bodies, both of the public and of the Municipality of Lesvos, intervene, so that environmental crime can be stopped.
On the basis of the patently absurd decision of the State Real Estate Company (K.E.D.) published in the Official Gazette 36, D, 14-2-2012, it was decided to redraw the seafront, the old seafront and the beach, to the detriment of about rightful feeling” and circumventing any concept of protection of the beautiful beach and the surrounding area, simply to serve the property in question.
WE REQUEST: The intervention of the Municipality of Lesvos so that with a NEW topographical survey based on the data of the coastal engineering study of the University of the Aegean (which has already been handed over to them) request the redraw of Aegialos by the KED in accordance with the letter and spirit of the law protecting the particularly beautiful sandy beach of Eresos from erosion.
