2 years in prison, suspended for 3 yearsthe three-member Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki convicted the owners of an elderly care center for the negligent death of a 66-year-old quadriplegic, following a fire that broke out in the center in July 2019.

Examining the case in the second degree, the court found the two defendants (androgynous) guilty of manslaughter, reducing the sentence by one year, compared to the first court decision.

The 66-year-old suffered significant burns and succumbed after being hospitalized. The fire, according to the Fire Department, is believed to have started from a cigarette, with the victim’s relatives testifying in court that due to his quadriplegia, he was unable to hold the cigarette and smoked only with the help of third parties. Already from the previous court, an order was given to investigate any criminal responsibilities of other persons.

The indictment states that the fire detector in the unfortunate man’s room did not work because a lid had been placed, resulting in the fire burning for 20 minutes.

The defendants denied their criminal responsibilities but did not convince the judges with their allegations.
