Grimaldi responds to complaints from truck drivers about the condition of the ship

by

In connection with the recent allegations of the Trade Union / Association of Professional Truck Drivers of Greece (SEOFAE) regarding the alleged poor travel conditions of its members on the ship Euroferry Olympia, which caught fire on the night of February 18, 2022, the Grimaldi group wishes to following statement.

Like the other Grimaldi Group ships, the Euroferry Olympia undergoes regular cleaning and disinfection of both cabins and common areas, while maintenance work is common practice. The good conditions of the ship were confirmed, in fact, on February 16, 2022 in Igoumenitsa, where the Euroferry Olympia was inspected and controlled by the Greek Port Authorities (including the smoke detection and firefighting systems), which ended with satisfactory results.

According to international regulations (SOLAS, etc.), passengers are strictly forbidden to access the garage decks while the ship is sailing. This safety rule is strictly enforced by Grimaldi Group ships.

In addition, in order to ensure that this rule is complied with by all passengers on board, in particular truck drivers, the evacuation of cargo space is checked before departure and designated crews regularly patrol the garage decks during the voyage. .

If a truck driver deliberately decides to hide in his truck, this behavior is a clear violation of international regulations and rules of the Grimaldi group, which may endanger his and the ship’s safety.

Regarding the allegations of SEOFAE about excessive bookings of Euroferry Olympia in Igoumenitsa on the night of February 18, this is another inaccurate statement, as the electronic booking system (for goods and passengers) of the Grimaldi group does not allow any bookings. In this case of passengers, only 42% of the passenger capacity was occupied during the Euroferry Olympia voyage on 18 February 2022.

In terms of passenger accommodation, the 77 cabins (corresponding to 308 beds) and the 409 reclining seats of the ship could easily and comfortably accommodate the 239 passengers (of whom 159 drivers) who were traveling on the ship (for one voyage 9). hours and not 25 hours, as incorrectly stated by the Association). It is important to note that, as with all Grimaldi Group ships, a number of cabins have been provided to truck drivers to meet their needs. In this case, all 159 passengers on board had a cabin, as well as another 26 passengers.

Finally, the allegations that the Euroferry Olympia, which carried dangerous goods, could not carry passengers, are once again an inaccurate statement, as the ship in question is a passenger / cargo ship, certified to carry both passengers and cargo. including the IMO load.
