Municipality of Athens: Record in the red bins for recycling clothes – 536 tons were collected in 2021

by

The Athenians stand out as the biggest allies of the Municipality in the strategic plan for the recycling and reuse of the clothing and footwear that are collected in the red bins of the capital. Strong evidence is the numbers recorded during the two years of the pandemic.

Specifically, in 2021 more than 536 tons of clothes and shoes were placed in these 250 special bins located in all seven municipal communities of Athens, a number that exceeds by 158% the amount of the corresponding items collected last year (2020). Of these items, the social services of the Municipality of Athens utilized and offered more than 4 tons of clothes to individuals and families in need, while this year due to the even greater response is expected to be distributed an additional 7 tons of clothes (11 in total), in excellent condition.

“Citizens, in the midst of a pandemic, have proved that recycling is now established in their consciousness and becomes part of their culture. The Municipality’s program for recycling is, among other things, a structural element of everyday culture. We are pleased that Athenians are responding to this project in an impressive way and for one more reason: Because it also has an important social dimension, as it substantially supports vulnerable groups in Athens, combining a sustainability initiative with an act of social character “, emphasizes in a statement the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakogiannis.

What we collect in the red bins

In the “red” points, which are located in central parts of the city, those interested can place:

– Clean clothes (men, women and children)

– Shoes in pairs (men, women and children)

– Linen (pillows, sheets, duvet covers, etc.)

– Accessories (belts, bags, etc.)

It is noted that recycling significantly reduces the percentage of clothes which ends up in the trash, as well as those that are unsuitable for reuse, are recycled to create fabrics for cleaning or used to create work uniforms, material for sound and heat insulation, filling for car seats, etc.

The clothing recycling program is implemented in collaboration with the company Recycom.
