Gradual return to normalcy but also continuation of the surveillance of the coronavirus that will continue its endemic presence, predicts Professor Sotiris Tsiodras.
Speaking at a conference on “Two Years of the Covid-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Lessons for the Armed Forces”, the professor said that the data so far show that the “Omicron” mutation will lead to a stabilization of the situation.
We are at the end of the emergency phase of the pandemic
He warned, however, that we are not at the end of the coronavirus history but perhaps at the end of what we call the “emergency phase”.
In this context, Mr. Tsiodras said that each country must find its own appropriate path to transition to normalcy, based on epidemiological data and its demographics. Especially for Europe, he said the freedom plan is the next priority.
“Do not be fooled, Omicron will touch us all”
“The professors from Oxford say: ” Do not be deceived, Omicron will touch us all ”, so with the data so far, maybe it is our return to a stability, to a change of way of thinking but also to deal with everything the weapons of science “, he emphasized characteristically.
Especially for Greece, he said that although the cases are many, the number of deaths is not corresponding and this is due to the fact that Omicron leads to a milder disease while the vaccination coverage is increased.

According to Mr. Tsiodras, in the coming months and certainly next year, the surveillance will focus more on hospitalizations, serious respiratory disease, ICU hospitalizations, the number of intubations and deaths.
Regarding the probability of death, he stated that it is 1,000 increased for those over 80 in relation to the younger ages, based on the Greek data, while the risk of ending up is also related to the patient’s diseases.
Almost 100% protection with three doses
Citing data from Greece, the professor said that protection against serious illness and death rises to about 100% with the three doses of the coronavirus vaccine. In our country, he added, we had the prevention of about 20,000 deaths in the Greek population.
Omicron probably does not need a special vaccine
Regarding the usefulness of a special vaccine for the Omicron mutation, Mr. Tsiodras stressed that the experimental data from experimental animals show that the three doses with the existing vaccine may be better than a special vaccine for the Omicron.
He explained what “hybrid immunity” is, which is a combination of natural immunity, with immunity from the vaccine that leads to a much more dynamic response of the organism characterized by long-term B and T lymphocytes.
The worst complications of the coronavirus
The professor’s report was extensive on the complications of the coronavirus, which are observed not only in those who were admitted to hospital or ICU but even in patients who were not treated. Among other things, he mentioned thrombosis, strokes, cardiovascular risk from atrial fibrillation to heart failure.
He warned pregnant women that the virus leads to placental abruption, fetal death, “Histologically, we know this from pregnant women in our hospital. “Pregnant women who have not been vaccinated.”
He also spoke about the huge and unbalanced impact of the pandemic on the mental health of the population, with 53 million people worldwide suffering from major depression and 76 million cases of anxiety disorder.
