Greece and Turkey: How do they see each other according to a joint poll of citizens in both countries

The majority of Greek and Turkish citizens “continue to favor the settlement of bilateral disputes by peaceful means”, according to the second joint poll in Greece and Turkey conducted in December 2021 – the first took place in February 2021 – with participation of Greek and Turkish citizens and was conducted by two polling companies, the Greek MRB and the Turkish KONDA.

In the second poll, the optimism and confidence that characterized Turkish public opinion in the February 2021 poll show a decline. While in February, 78.5% of Turks considered their country a regional power in the political and economic field. , in December 2021 this percentage went to 63.8%. At the same time, pessimism about the general course of the country is growing, with 67% of Turks saying that things are going quite to very bad in their country compared to 62.5% who said in February.

THE joint poll is a product of the research partnership of diANEOsis, ELIAMEP and the Istanbul Policy Center (IPC).

The questionnaire was public in Hellas and Turkeywhile most of the questions remained the same, in order to either confirm the trends reflected in the first poll, or to point out the dynamics of possible changes.

The poll was presented at an online event by the heads of diANEOsis and ELIAMEP, professors and researchers specializing in the relations between the two countries with commentators Polina Lampsa (Coordinator, Greek Team, Greek-Turkish Forum), and journalist Vassilis Ne.
