This particular man, unable to contain his anger upon hearing the sentences, threw a chair at Vassilis Matthaiopoulos – He is a relative of the father of the twin girls, who were cremated with their grandparents
Anger overflows from relatives who lost their loved ones in the deadly fire in Mati with hearing the sentences from the Three-member Criminal Court of Athens, six years later. In fact, a man in the audience threw a chair at BAsili Matthaiopoulos.
“I take responsibility for my actions,” wrote the man who threw the chair in a Facebook post. “I threw a chair at Matthaiopoulos and I’m at the police station. I take responsibility for my action and I am the only one in this room who takes responsibility,” he says in his post about what unfolded in the courtroom today, Maundy Monday.
This man is a relative of the father of the twin girls, who were cremated with their grandparents.
Strong reactions from relatives
However, the reaction of the other relatives who were inside the courtroom was fierce.
“Give them praise too” someone was heard shouting.
“Your court is an insult to the dead, the living and the truth”: this is how one of the residents of the area expressed his reaction after listening to the lawyers of the defendants asking the court for leniency.
“All honest family men are… I can’t take it anymore… I’ve waited six years… I’m going to have a stroke today. Do you understand what you’ve judged?” , a woman said…
Applause of disapproval at every interruption… Congratulations… You have no chips… Depraved… Pitiful… In your hole… You are not human” the relatives shouted, unable to believe the decision of the justice they were waiting to deliver…
During the recommendations of the advocates for the recognition of mitigating factors, the reactions of the relatives of the victims continued in the courtroom.
Audience: They have torn apart our homes… your court is an affront to the dead and the living and to the truth.
President: Go outside…
Audience: I hold you personally responsible for the country’s mess. Get us all out!
Woman: None of you wear pants. All honest family men…
President: Do not interrupt
Woman: I can’t drown. I’m going to have a stroke now
Man: 24 year old kid lost.. leave her
President: You will not interrupt the lawyers!
Woman: Never find them to tell them?
“All honest family men are… And we had families… I can’t take it anymore… I’ve waited six years… I’m going to have a stroke today. Do you understand what you’ve judged?” said a woman.
