The Gendarmerie violently breaks up a gathering of striking tobacco workers in Thessaloniki. Twelve dead and 32 injured are the tragic toll of the deadly clashes. Inspired by the dead tobacco workers, Yiannis Ritsos will shortly after write his poem “Epitafios”, which will be set to music by Mikis Theodorakis.
