Thirty-seven people aged between 15 and 90 got food poisoning after St George’s Day picnic
An outdoor meal on St. George’s Day sent 37 people to the Varda Health Center with food poisoning. All residents of the village of Vouprasia, participated in the festive festive table that was set up in the courtyard of the church of Agios Georgios. The traditional village celebration, however, ended in a great adventure for the residents who, shortly after eating the meal, ended up with severe symptoms at the Health Center.
Residents of all ages, from 15 to 90 years old, ended up at the Varda Health Center with severe pain for first aid.
As reported to ilialive.gr by a resident of the village who wishes to remain anonymous, 37 people, all together at the same table, shortly after the meal presented the first symptoms with severe pains in the stomach and abdomen. “We all ate from the same food. There was boiled meat and sweets. A short time later, the first symptoms began to appear. Strong malaise, abdominal pains and 37 people ended up at the Health Center with food poisoning. The doctors on duty offered us first aid, medication and serums.”
From early in the afternoon, around one o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, the Varda Health Center received dozens of residents with exactly the same symptoms.
As stated to ilialive.gr the deputy director of K.Y. Stavros Leventis, the first patients were two brothers aged 15 and 16 and their mother.
“At first we thought it was gastroenteritis. But as soon as other patients started arriving, who were all from the same village and found themselves at the same table, we immediately realized that it was food poisoning. The symptoms were intense: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Appropriate medication was immediately provided and we managed the situation at the Health Center, without the need for any transport. The patients remained in the short hospital with serums and as soon as they felt better they all returned to their homes.
“However, until the drugs took effect, they suffered from the pains” concludes Mr. Leventis, who notes that if the conditions for cooking or preserving the meat are not suitable, there is always a great risk of food poisoning.
