With the examination of the first witness it began in the Joint Jury the trial of the nursing home managers in Thessaloniki, where in August 2020 there was a flurry of Covid-19 cases, with the result that 28 elderly people lost their lives from complications related to the coronavirus.

The two managing directors of the nursing home (brothers) are sitting on the court bench, the first as responsible for scientific matters and the second as responsible for administrative matters.

Before the start of the proceedings the defendants were asked to take the stand on the charge attributed to them – that of violating disease prevention measures resulting in the death of a large number of people – which they both denied. There had been previous objections by the defense attorneys, which concerned the disbarment of the civil action attorneys, which were, however, rejected in their entirety.

The first witness was examined son of an old woman, who recovered (without symptoms) and was hospitalized for two weeks at “G. Papanicolaou” before returning to the nursing home, where he is still housed today. Citing the communication he had during the pandemic with his 67-year-old (today) mother, he stated that she did not convey any complaints to him regarding the measures being followed or the hygiene conditions. “She wasn’t worried – my mother felt and still feels the unit as her home, that’s what she said when she was in the hospital. Preventive tests (for the coronavirus) were being conducted, but I don’t know with what frequency,” the 67-year-old’s son said – among other things. The indictment list includes more than 70 witnesses, most of whom are relatives of the elderly.

The will with which the two defendants were referred to trial is based on the conclusions of an investigation carried out by inspectors of the National Transparency Authority, which was prompted by a prosecutor’s investigation.

Among other things, a number of violations of the prevention measures against the spread of the coronavirus were found – according to the referral will – such as excessive numbers of patients treated (156 instead of 88), non-observance of distances in the rooms for the elderly and in common areas, non-conduct of preventive molecular detection tests of the virus for the early detection of cases, etc.
