The main axes of the Strategic and Business Development Plan (Business Plan) of the port of Alexandroupolis were presented by TAIPED officials during an event held at the Prefecture of the capital of Evros for the signing of the contract, amounting to 4 million euros, for the road connection project new commercial jetty of the port with the new Ring Road.

“With a series of investments included in the new development plan, the port of Alexandroupolis is going to be substantially upgraded in order to meet its new strategic role. The aim is to emerge as a commercial and energy hub in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, playing an important role in regional trade between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean”, said the managing director of TAIPED, Dimitris Politis. He characterized the Master Plan – the revision of which is in progress – and the Strategic Environmental Impact Study, the Road Map for the future development of OLA, assuring that the Fund with its significant expertise in the utilization and management of port infrastructure, will continue to contributes catalytically to the State’s plan, so that in the coming years the Greek ports will be a strong driver of sustainable development for the country.

For his part, the mandated advisor of TAIPED, Panagiotis Stampoulidis noted: “With the contribution of the Strategic Contracts Unit, which has undertaken to mature two very important projects for the upgrading of the port – with a total budget of 18.2 million euros – the port of Alexandroupolis is dynamically transforming. Referring to the road connection project of the new commercial pier of the port with the new Ring Road, he noted that it will bring substantial benefits to the local community and the environment by creating new jobs, decongesting the city and reducing greenhouse gas emissions .

According to the presentation of TAIPED executives, the following actions are underway:

-Update of the Master Plan of OLA to meet the current conditions and environmental and zoning licensing needs

– Road connection of the new commercial pier of the port with the new Eastern Regional Road which is already under construction (investment of 4 million euros)

– Restoration of grades (dredging) of the port basin – the contracting of the project within May – and the navigation channel of the port (investment of 14.2 million euros)

-Completion of electromechanical equipment and facilities of the commercial jetty (investment of 1.2 million euros)

-Collaboration with Gastrade to service the FSRU -providing storage and port spaces

-Consultations with industrial and commercial clients (cement industry and logistics) for the utilization of OLA facilities

– Investigating the possibility of supporting the development of offshore wind farms

The next steps in the development of the port of Alexandroupoli

-Construction by the end of 2025 of the first of a total of five silos to be built by 2032, with a capacity of 10 tons

-Supply of equipment for loading and unloading cargo from the silo to the ship within 2025

-Supply of wagon and conveyor belt to transport loads to the silos by the end of 2027

-Supply of a gantry crane (40 tons/40 m.) for the loading and unloading of containers from trucks and trains until the end of 2027

-Supply of three lifters for handling empty containers and other loads and two cranes for transporting containers to storage areas

Indicatively, the budget for investments totaling 91.7 million euros that will be carried out in the period 2024-2032 is as follows:

-Upgrading port infrastructure, 18.2 million euros

-Management of grains/cereals, 27 million euros

-Management of containers, 44.5 million euros

-Other investments, 2 million euros

It is noted that the event was attended by the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianidis, the Secretary General of Shipping and Ports, Vangelis Kyriazopoulos, the managing director of TAIPED Dimitris Politis, the president and managing director of the Port of Alexandroupolis Organization, Panagiotis Stampoulidis and Costas Chatzikonstantinou respectively, the regional governor A.M.Th. Christodoulos Topsidis, the deputy regional governor P.E. Evrou Vangelis Poulilios, the mayors of Alexandroupoli and Samothraki, Yiannis Zamboukis and Thanasis Vitsas. The contract was signed by the managing director of TEKAL, Panagiotis Psaltakos and officials of TAIPED on behalf of the construction contractor of the project.
