Which buildings is it going to be temporarily moved to?
The Council of State temporarily for a month it will suspend its operation due to the major repair work that has begun in Arsakeio Megaro on Panepistimi Street, in which it is housed today and the issuance of a relevant decision by the Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis is expected.
In particular, the signing of the ministerial decision is expected, which will determine the exact period of suspension of the CoE.
According to the data so far, the suspension of operation of the CoE will be between the end of next June and the first 20 days of July 2024. The exact time of suspension of operation depends on the progress of the construction works of the building where the CoE will be moved.
More specifically, the CoE will be moved to two buildings in the center of Athens.
One building is at the junction of Sofokleous and Aiolou streets (it used to house Emporiki Bank and today Alfa Bank), opposite the old Stock Exchange, and has an area of 7,700 sq.m. Meeting rooms, conference rooms, electrical installations, room dividers, etc. are already being created in the building.
The second building that will be moved part of the CoE is on Ippokratous Street, inside the arcade that has an exit to Panepistomi, which until recently housed the “Hondos Center” store. This lease will be for 5 years and will basically house the assistant judges, who for the first time will assist in the work of the Supreme Court judges. The area of this floor is 650 sq.m.
The repairs to the Arsakeio Mansion, as announced by the Ministry of Justice, had an initial budget of 13.2 million euros with funding from the Development and Resilience Fund. However, there was additional funding of 4.5 million euros, bringing the total amount of repairs to 17.7 million euros.
The contract for the restoration of Arsakei was signed with the contractor of the project the company “P&C Development”, with the agreement that the building will not be evacuated. But then it was found that the repairs could not be carried out while the court would be operating. Thus, it was decided that the Arsakei building must be evacuated.
