The official presentation yesterday at Hellinikon of MOUNT OLYMPUS, one of the six Boeings, bought by Aristotle Onassis in the late 1960s for the “Olympic Aviation” attracted a large crowd
The inauguration of the second life cycle of the historic Boeing B727/284 MOUNT OLYMPUS – the aircraft bought in 1968 by Aristotle Onassis and which since 2001 was abandoned at Hellinikon Airport – took place yesterday on Vouliagmenis Avenue, where the plane will now be exhibited in permanent base.
The official presentation in Hellinikon of MOUNT OLYMPUS, one of the six Boeings, bought by Aristotle Onassis in the late 1960s and used by “Olympic Aviation” in domestic and international flights, attracted a crowd of people while girls in Olympic uniforms ” revived’ the golden days of the famous airline – once a national carrier.
The company’s flight attendants have been dressed for over 50 years by famous designers, such as the internationally renowned Greek-French designer Giannis Dessses, Giannis Tseklenis, Pierre Cardin and Coco Chanel.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras. During his greeting, Mr. Staikouras emphasized, among other things, that “The imposing aircraft, as a tourist attraction, will highlight the aviation heritage of our country and will be a landmark for the Municipality of Hellinikon. Because it is not just an exhibit, but a living monument to the history of Greek aviation.”
Aristotle Onassis’ love for aircraft was such that he used to say: “Ships are my wife and airplanes are my mistress.”
Onassis founded Olympic Aviation in 1957 and by the mid-70s his “love” for the company was beginning to fade. The tragic death of his son Alexandros in a plane crash and the dramatic increase in the company’s operating costs due to the oil crisis were the two main reasons that made him lose all interest in his creation, until at the beginning of 1975 the company passed to control of the state.
