Kos is being tested, states the South Aegean regional governor, Mr. Giorgos Hatzimarkos, in a statement, pointing out that the battle is ongoing to deal with the fire. In particular, the governor of South Aegean states the following:

“Kos is being tested. The state apparatus, in its entirety and with the valuable assistance of volunteers, is fighting the battle of putting out the fire. At the same time, visitors are being taken to safe places.

The South Aegean Region is in direct communication, both centrally and locally, with the competent state agencies, supporting the work of the Fire Brigade and the Municipality of Kos, which has the mandate of Civil Protection.

Main concern, the protection of human life. It is what counts above all in these difficult times.

With calmness, solidarity and responsibility, Kos will emerge victorious from this great challenge. We are all with her!”

An appeal is addressed by the mayor of Kos, Theodosis Nikitaras, in his post on Facebook for help from volunteer groups to help extinguish the fire which has been ongoing since noon. Specifically, it states the following:

“Urgent!

We urgently need volunteer groups and young people to rush to help our project. The public buildings of Antimachia, the Lyceum and Gymnasium complex, the Primary School and the Hall of Dormition remain open, where residents and visitors of Kardamena can go after the evacuation due to the ongoing fire. Voluntary help offered for the care of our fellow human beings can be directed to the same places.”
