It was necessary to build a makeshift ramp for the animal to “escape”.
Climbing a makeshift wooden ramp, a young bear managed to “escape” from the water tank where it had fallen, in the local community of Metamorfosi of the municipality of Zitsa Ioannina, in the Mitsikeli massif, on the borders of the North Pindos National Park.
Residents of Metamorfosi informed the Northern Pindos National Park Management Unit of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA), the Ioannina Forestry Department and the environmental organization Kallisto, whose officials, along with a specialized veterinarian, rushed to the scene about the trapped bear.
It was found that the rain tank was filled with water almost to the height of the animal, which was quite exhausted and was swimming, in vain, to find some way of escape.
To free him, the First Response Team emptied the tank and built a makeshift escape ramp out of wood, which the young bear used to escape and return to its habitat.
According to a related announcement, the rescue operation of the young bear was carried out with due care, taking all the necessary safety measures by the specialized staff of the above-mentioned agencies, who cooperated within the framework of the Immediate Intervention Team. An important role in the success of the business was the immediate mobilization and coordination of the competent bodies, as well as the immediate information from the local community.
It is noted that in the area of the Northern Pindos National Park, the LIFE ARCPROM project is implemented with the participation of OFYPEKA and Kallisto, which aims to improve the conditions for the coexistence of brown bears and humans in the National Parks of the Rhodope Mountains, Prespons, North Pindos ( Greece) and Maiella (in Italy). Open rainwater tanks, especially when their fencing is incomplete or damaged, are a potential hazard to all fauna. To address the problem, Callisto is working to modify water reservoirs that may pose a risk to bears through the Life Bear Smart Corridors project.
