A forest… of deckchairs and table seats were cleared in Corfu, in a coordinated operation, by the Real Estate Service of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Hellenic Police on a beach in the NAOK (Nautical Sports Club of Corfu) area of the Municipality. The beach is located in the center of the city where it was found arbitrary occupation of part of the beach by a company.

It is worth noting that this is a beach that is chosen daily by, among others, older citizens and vacationers as well as families with children which could not be moved to other beaches.

The control mechanism was mobilized directly after dozens of citizen complaints (telephone as well as through the MyCoast app) and after violations were detected, within less than 24 hours, the illegally occupied space was once again made available for public use as all installed movable objects were removed.

In more detail, during the autopsy it was established that there were arbitrary occupations of four parts of the beach with a total area of 210 sq.m. without a simple use concession agreement where the company had placed 13 umbrellas, 46 sunbeds, 13 tables and 20 seats.

The Topographic Map and Post-mortem Report were immediately drawn up and the Deed of Removal and Sealing Order issued. The area was sealed with tape, all economic activity within the area was ordered to cease and entry was prohibited. The movable objects were then removed at the company’s responsibility. In addition, a fine is expected to be issued to the company, in accordance with what the law provides, and which is going to exceed 35,000 euros.

It is emphasized that checks continue throughout the country, while intensive checks are already underway in 10 areas that gather the largest number of complaints and for which there will be newer announcements.

It is recalled that, in the cases of detection of violations of the concessions for the simple use of seashores and beaches during controls, the procedure provides for:

  • the issuance of the relevant fine which, based on the new strict law enacted a few months ago, amounts to four times the consideration that the entrepreneur would have paid for one year if he had entered into a contract.
  • the immediate removal – within 48 hours – of all illegal umbrella seats as well as constructions under the responsibility of the entrepreneur. If this is not done, then the responsibility for removal is assumed by the Municipality.
